7 Tips for Building Your Perfect Deck

Feb 21, 2017

Everyone loves to spend as much time outdoors as possible, but you, like many other people, want the ultimate in comfort when you are outside. This comfort is why the indoors has been slowly creeping outside over the years. Decks are being built with options, furniture, and decor that match the inside of the house it is attached to.

Here are 7 tips for building your perfect deck:

The Dimensions

The first thing that you will need to do is decide on how large you want your deck to be. It should be large enough to accommodate your family and friends, but not too large and unmanageable. Also consider whether it will be a single level or if you will incorporate multiple levels joined by stairs.

Usability

Once you determine the size of your deck, you will need to figure out how you will be using your deck. Will you only be sitting in the sun reading a book while enjoying a drink or will you be entertaining a lot of people? Your layout and design will depend on your answer.

Material Options

You will want to choose the materials that your deck is made from very carefully. There is no point of you saving money by choosing to build your deck out of wood, if you have no desire to clean and seal the deck every year. If you are not big on maintenance, then you will want to choose a material that is as maintenance free as possible.

Seating Options

Seating is important on a deck and so is storage. We recommend that you try to include some benches with built-in storage. These benches can have a variety of uses including seating and displaying a buffet of food or drinks.

Add some Shade

If your deck is going to get quite a bit of sun and you prefer the shade, we recommend that you build a pergola. The pergola will offer shade for at least part of the day and it can be the focal point of your deck.

Planters and Other Decor

Add color to your deck with planters filled with your favorite flowers. These planters can be scattered around on your deck to add visual appeal.

Anticipated Activity Level

If your deck will be used for many activities, it is always best to determine where each one will take place. If possible, you should have different seating areas for each activity that you will be doing. This may mean having a main seating area for meals and a couple of other areas filled with a couple of chairs and small tables. This will allow you to sit in the perfect space at any time.

Your Deck, Your Choices

Your new deck should be an oasis where you can sit and relax at any time of the day or night. As long as you take your time in the planning process, you should be able to build the deck of your dreams.
