Kitchen Cabinets Make Up a Good Portion of Kitchen Remodeling Costs

Oct 19, 2016

Kitchen remodeling isn’t cheap. We’re pretty sure that every homeowner is aware of that fact. But did you know that the cabinetry you choose can make up roughly 40% of the remodeling budget? That’s a lot of cash bundled up into kitchen cabinets alone. And that’s why we recommend brushing up on your understanding of the different types of cabinet before making your final decision.

Kitchen Cabinet Choices

The three basic choices are stock, semi-custom, and custom. Here’s a basic rundown of each type:

  • Stock Cabinets: These are cabinets that are sold at your local home improvement center or online. They carry the lowest price tag and are usually in stock. Delivery may take as little as a week if any particular part of the cabinet system needs to be ordered.
  • Semi-custom Cabinets: These are also sold as factory-made and in standard sizes. The big difference is that you can choose between several different wood types, finishes, and decorative features. You can also purchase them in larger widths and with drawer inserts, pantry units, or sliding shelving. It generally takes about six weeks for semi-custom cabinetry to be delivered based on your preferences.
  • Custom Cabinets: Custom cabinetry is built to your precise specifications. Custom cabinets allow us to fully customize your kitchen with the most efficient layout to fit your needs. You can choose nearly any type of wood, details, and even period styles if you prefer Victorian or some other style. These are the most expensive and the best choice for a completely unique kitchen.

Additional Costs that Go with Cabinetry

You can further customize your cabinets by adding your own woodwork, specialty doors, or unusual hardware. Consider adding your own accessories if you’re leaning toward stock or semi-custom to save on costs. You can usually create a custom appearance by using different finishing touches.

We absolutely recommend going all out with custom cabinetry and unique hardware if cost is no obstacle. We believe that every homeowner should have the opportunity to design and build at least one fully custom kitchen in their lifetime. We would love to be part of your custom kitchen build if this is your time to shine.
