Money Saving Ideas for Your 2017 or 2018 New Home Construction Project

May 22, 2017

One of the reasons for why home construction is such a big decision is the cost involved. Building from the ground up, or adding to an existing building both require serious forethought and planning. Everyone wants to rein in costs, but not to the detriment of the project. The good news is that you can find ways to shave your construction budget, while using quality materials and staying on schedule. Here are some of the main ways to go about this.

  • Go over the budget details. You should have a full idea of your construction budget before the project starts. Set a meeting with your contractor to go over the budget line by line. Chances are, you may find a few items that you can do without and save yourself hundreds of dollars or more.
  • Get more than one estimate. Experts usually advise getting at least three estimates for a construction project. This will give you an idea of the market rates, and help you to find a contractor who is more in line with your budget.
  • Be realistic about the scale. It is tempting to build a big house or to make a large addition, but is that really what you need. The construction project should be based squarely on the space needs of your family. Shaving a few feet off the plan can save you a few thousand dollars on materials and labor.
  • Use reclaimed materials. Many construction projects have an environmental component. This is often evident in the use of reclaimed wood and other materials in construction. This can reduce your project’s carbon footprint and save money at the same time. You can also think long term by adding energy efficiency features such as solar panels, wind turbines and a solar water heater.
  • Try DIY. While you should leave complex jobs to the professionals, you can do some basic tasks as long as your have enough experience. These jobs may include painting, putting up shelves or staining a deck.
  • Take advantage of the off season. Most construction projects take place in the summer, so you can benefit from getting your work done during the slow period, roughly from January to the start of summer. This is not convenient for all types of projects, but in many cases you can get much lower rates for labor and possibly materials.

Always be realistic about what you want for your project and how quickly you want it don’t. Some projects require a commitment for months due to the scope of the work and budget issues.
